The tailing redfish action in Mosquito Lagoon has been as good as it gets recently. Schools of happy fish have been staying on the flats in less than 2 feet of water most of the day. The fist cold front of the year schooled up the reds and also brought some big seatrout up shallow for the first time since spring. The fish have been in thick grass so weedless soft plastics, the DOA shrimp, and flies with weed guards are a good idea.
Anglers fly fishing charters in Mosquito Lagoon with me have been using rods as light as 5 weight with 15 pound leaders and floating line for both redfish and seatrout. Many days it is necessary to use tiny bonefish style flies to get the most bites from reds. On one recent trip, however, a topwater gurgler fly drew lots of attention. Spin anglers use 10lb braided line with a 20lb leader.
As the water warmed up during the week, the seatrout moved off the flats and out to the edges and dropoffs. A DOA CAL shad tail on a 1/8oz jighead bounced along the bottom resulted in consistent bites from redfish and trout.
The next cold front does not arrive until after Thanksgiving. The light winds and clear skies have been great for sight fishing. After the front moves through, even more seatrout should move on to the shallow flats and sand holes. Cool water brings clear water conditions and excellent sight fishing.
