Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report Near Orlando – March 9, 2026

The saltwater flats fishing near Orlando for redfish and black drum has been outstanding recently. It appears the strong cold fronts of February are behind us, bringing some excellent flats fishing to Mosquito Lagoon. Anglers on my boat using both spinning and fly fishing tackle have had success with schooling and tailing redfish and black drum.

My sight fishing charters involve quietly stalking fish in clear, shallow water and casting to fish you can see. Whether you are using a #4 shrimp fly on a 7-weight fly rod, a 3-inch DOA shrimp, or even a live shrimp, the cast must land close enough for the fish to see your offering without spooking them. We may encounter a single redfish, a group of five, or a school of over 200 fish. Each situation presents its own unique scenario and excitement.

Tailing redfish have been consistent and are offering anglers numerous shots every day. A tailing redfish has its head buried in the grass searching for food while part or all of its tail breaks the surface. A favorite of most anglers, tailing redfish are actively feeding but require precise casts, especially when targeting single fish or small groups. They will take a variety of flies and lures, with topwater presentations producing the most spectacular bites. Our average redfish on the flats runs 24–27 inches, with fish over 20 pounds seen almost every day.

Mosquito Lagoon lies between Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach to the north and the Kennedy Space Center to the south, about one hour from Orlando and Disney. It offers some of the best inshore saltwater fishing in Central Florida. Despite the less-than-attractive name, there are no mosquitoes out on the water. There are also no condos, hotels, or houses around, offering a peaceful setting among the fish, dolphins, and manatees.

The tailing redfish action should continue for the foreseeable future. I still have a few days open in March and April. Book your Mosquito Lagoon redfish charter today by visiting my website or call or text 321-229-2848.
