The saltwater flats fishing in Mosquito Lagoon near Orlando has remained very productive, with a noticeable shift into slightly dirtier water and thicker grass compared to the clear winter conditions, but the redfish action has not slowed down. tailing redfish are still the main focus, pushing water and rooting aggressively in the grass, creating excellent sight fishing opportunities despite reduced visibility. Anglers are getting numerous shots each casting to tailing fish, waking fish, and others you can spot within 5-40ft of the boat. The most consistent success has been on a 3-inch DOA CAL and DOA Shrimp when fishing spin tackle, while fly anglers are doing well with a #4 shrimp or small crab pattern presented quietly and accurately. In addition to redfish, we are encountering some very large schools of black drum, many fish in the 10–15 pound range, offering steady action when located. Presentations still need to be precise in the thicker grass to avoid fouling and to get the bait in front of feeding fish naturally, but the payoff has been excellent with steady catches. As water temperatures continue to rise, we are on the verge of the first tarpon showing up any day now, which will add another exciting dimension to these trips. Overall, this is a great time to be on the water with consistent redfish action, big drum schools, and the anticipation of early tarpon season just around the corner.
