Low pressure in the air and on the water

As we would expect from springtime in Florida, we are getting absolutely beautiful weather and great fishing.

With just enough weather to keep the barometer bouncing, the fishing in Florida’s Big Bend has been outstanding. The redfish haven’t schooled up into huge groups yet, but they are scattered across just about every rock point on high tide and cruising the flats on low tide. This is creating some incredible sight-fishing opportunities.

We are throwing artificials, and the MirrOlure MirrOdine and She Dog have been our go-to hard baits. Once the sun gets up, the Saltwater Assassin Sea Shad and 5-inch jerk bait on a jig head have been getting the job done.

The best bite of last week came from moving into slightly deeper water and targeting Sea Trout, Black Sea Bass, and Cobia. I’ve been finding these fish in 5 to 9 feet of water around hard rock bottom. The best baits for this bite have been the Saltwater Assassin Sea Shad and P&V on a 1/4-ounce jig head.

We are also starting to see more Tarpon cruising through the area, creating opportunities for both live bait and artificial anglers alike.

One of the most attractive things about our area is the other low pressure — meaning the low amount of fishermen and boats. That is what makes this part of Florida so special. Low fishing pressure creates aggressive fish, more opportunities, and the kind of fishing experience that has become hard to find in many other parts of the state.

If you’ve been thinking about planning a trip, now is the time. The spring bite is only getting better, the weather has been beautiful, and there’s no better place to experience true Old Florida fishing than the Big Bend. Whether you want to sight-fish redfish on the flats, chase cobia and tarpon, or simply enjoy a laid-back day on the water with family and friends, we can make it happen.
