If you’ve been looking for steady, high-quality fishing action off Anna Maria Island, now is the time to get out on the water. Our recent nearshore reef trips have been nothing short of outstanding, with Mangrove Snapper, Lane Snapper, and even a few surprise Hogfish keeping rods bent and coolers full. Conditions have been consistent, bait has been plentiful, and the reefs are absolutely loaded with life right now.
As water temperatures settle into their late-fall pattern, the nearshore structure from 3 to 9 miles offshore has become incredibly productive. Whether you’re targeting a family-friendly mixed-bag trip or filling the freezer with premium fillets, the current bite is exactly what anglers want this time of year.
Mangrove Snapper – Thick Schools & Quality Size
Mangrove snapper have been the stars of the show. We’re finding large schools stacking tightly on nearly every piece of hard bottom we’ve been fishing. The average size has been strong, with plenty of 13–15” fish and a good number of bigger mangos mixed in.
What’s working:
- Light leaders (20–25 lb fluorocarbon)
- Small hooks (1/0–2/0 circle hooks)
- Live shrimp and small pilchards
- Slow-sinking cut baits when the current slows
The fish have been hitting aggressively and staying active even during the middle of the day. If you’re looking to put high-quality fillets in the box, this is about as reliable as it gets.
Lane Snapper – Consistent and Colorful
Lane snapper have also been excellent on the reefs, offering a steady bite and beautiful coloration typical for this time of year. Lanes are great for newer anglers because they eat readily, fight well on light tackle, and taste fantastic.
We’re catching them on the same setups as mangroves, with shrimp and squid being especially productive. Many trips have produced a mixed cooler of mangroves and lanes, which is exactly what guests love to see.
Hogfish – A Few Bonus Beauties
While not the primary target, we’ve picked off a handful of hogfish throughout the week — always a welcome addition. True hogfish on hook-and-line are special, and when they show up, they’re usually quality fish.
They’ve been hitting:
- Live shrimp on light jigheads
- Small knocker rigs
- Softer presentations with minimal weight
These reef gems have been a highlight for many anglers and a great indicator that winter’s prime hogfish season isn’t far away.
Conditions & What to Expect
Weather windows have been good, and when the winds settle, the nearshore waters clear quickly. With stable temperatures and plenty of bait on the reefs, this pattern should hold for the coming weeks.
If you’re looking for a trip that offers:
- Steady rod-bending action
- Great table fare
- Light-tackle fun for all experience levels
…then the current nearshore snapper bite is perfect.
