As February comes to a close, so does winter’s grip on the Big Bend. We may still get a few cool mornings, but those warm south winds are doing their job — the water temps are climbing and the fish know it’s time.
I’ve had the flats boat in action the past few weeks, and things are heating up. We’re not finding fish on every single point just yet, but the areas that are holding them are stacked with hungry schools of redfish. And the best part? They are absolutely crushing everything we throw at them. Artificial, cut bait, live bait — it doesn’t matter. When you find them, it’s game on.
March means we’ll be fishing primarily from the skiffs as the negative tide airboat pattern winds down. With more stable water levels, we’ll be covering water, sight fishing, and getting set up for what’s right around the corner…
Topwater season.
The blowups are coming. That explosive spring bite is about to take center stage, and there’s nothing like watching a redfish detonate on a topwater plug in shallow water.
If you haven’t locked in your spring fishing dates yet, now is the time. The best tides and the best days don’t stay open for long — and once that topwater bite turns on, the calendar fills fast.
Let’s go fishing.
